Building a Foundation for Successful Leaders in Dermatology
For Today's & Tomorrow's Leaders
Since graduating the inaugural Class of 2008, The Chief Academy has been the backbone of Leaders in Dermatology.
The Chief Academy has helped those chosen to be Chief Residents as well as fellows and residents aspiring for leadership positions to learn fundamental skills needed to perform their duties, serve their peers, and improve their programs. These skills are essential for success during the chief year and beyond. The Chief Academy also provides opportunities to build life long bonds with others chosen for leadership, as well as with the faculty and graduates of The Chief Academy.
Many graduates return as faculty to The Chief Academy. They do this to give back and because they are part of a family. Being part of this family provides many opportunities: networking, seeking advice, attending reunions and discussing timely topics with colleagues through Virtual Hot Topics. Our graduates have served as AAD President as well as Department Chairs, Program Directors and many other leadership positions in private practice, academia, and industry.
The Chief Academy Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting is held every spring either in person or virtually. Here, those selected to be rising Chief Residents as well as those aspiring for leadership positions convene to learn the core knowledge to be successful in leadership positions such as being a Chief Resident.
A separate leadership track for faculty desiring to develop leadership skills and become conversant in the challenges facing our specialty and residency programs is available. This track is open to any faculty currently in a leadership positions or those aspiring to become leaders.
Both the Chief Resident track and Program Director/Chair track are taught by seasoned faculty that have held leadership positions within our specialty societies, academic programs or private practices.

THE ORIGIN OF CHIEF ACADEMY
How It All Began
Chief Academy was conceived in the back of a cab in New York City... well that is kind of true! The idea came when a former chief resident and co-founder of Chief Academy was at a Summer AAD meeting in NYC, and shared a cab with a businessman on a busy Friday afternoon. They started discussing the intersection of medical training and business skills, and how most physicians in leadership positions do not have any formal training in basic management skills. The recently graduated dermatologist contacted department chairs and program directors from around the country and developed a curriculum for Chief Academy with one of his friends and close colleagues. And here we are over a decade later ensuring that both residents and faculty at training programs around the US have access to the knowledge required for leadership positions in residency, academics, and private practice. This knowledge is actually applicable to all aspects of life where you are dealing with people.
